Meet Newton
Sunday April 27th, at 16:00: Ramses van der Toorn in conversation with Yvonne Newton and her famous ancestor Isaac Newton.
Most people will know the name of Isaac Newton, perhaps one of the greatest scientists of all times, famous for his apple and gravity. What people may not know is that descendants of Newton live in our neighbourhood, and so does a scientist who just completed a book on Newton, and in particular his concept of gravity.
There will be a story in “Het Lopend Vuurtje” in April, and we want to take the opportunity to organise a small event in Colette around this topic.
Yvonne Newton will share a bit about her famous ancestor and then interview scientist Ramses van der Toorn on his book. Ramses has done a thorough study of Newton’s seminal work, the Principia, and writes eloquently on the importance of this work and its place in the tradition of Rationalism and the enlightenment, going back to classical antiquity. He shines new light on Newton’s own deduction of his theory of gravity, revealing some consequences of it that are now widely, yet unjustly, exclusively attributed to Einstein.
The event will be on Sunday April 27th, at 16:00. The event is free of charge, we would appreciate it if you reserved a spot via info@colette.red. The presentation will be in English.
